John Phillips, Managing Partner
John is a seasoned investment manager with 37 years’ experience managing multi asset class portfolios with a global perspective. He has a strong track record in research and analysis, trading and portfolio management of an extremely broad array of investment opportunities.
John brings an extensive background in equity, derivatives and macro. Having traded every market-moving event since the 1987 crash through 9/11, the Great Financial Crisis and the global pandemic, John is adept at navigating periods of extreme volatility, managing risk and harnessing consistent returns.
He has managed portfolios for financial institutions in the US, UK, Japan and Hong Kong. This includes the securities arm of quantitative hedge fund, D E Shaw, and for the Financial Products arm of KBC Bank. He also has extensive experience on the buy side, managing portfolios for Swiss Re, and multi-strategy investment firm First New York. Prior to founding MP Alpha Capital following the advent of the pandemic, John worked for Royal London.
Damien Miller, Managing Partner
Damien has spent his entire career in the investment management business in both London and New York. He has managed multi asset class portfolios often with a focus on value investing within the credit and equity market in both Europe and the US. This has always been combined with an in-depth focus on macro. He has significant experience managing money for pensions, endowments, family offices and high net worth individuals.
Over the course of his career, he has built a strong long-term track record in generating consistent returns across multiple business and investment cycles. This has been achieved through a research intensive-investment process and active trading and portfolio management. Damien has won multiple awards throughout his career for performance in the hedge fund space.
Damien started his career with Barclays Capital in London in 1997 before moving to New York in 2002. He became Head of Special Situations Investments in 2005. In 2007, he joined Alcentra as Global Head of Special Situations based in London. Before founding MP Alpha Capital following the advent of the pandemic, he was a Partner and Head of Bardin Hill Investment Partners Europe (formerly Halcyon Capital Management).
Stephen Molloy, Managing Partner
Stephen has spearheaded and established innovative digital, media, and technology businesses across global markets over the last 27 years.
As an adept commercial leader, Stephen excels in scaling companies from the ground up. He specializes in identifying emerging technologies that challenge traditional industry paradigms and elevate customer experience.
Foreseeing the potential of digital properties as a major new asset class as early as 2008, Stephen developed novel business models to monetize branded virtual goods (now known as NFTs) and interactive mobile-ready digital assets at companies such as Roblox and Adludio.
Recognizing the transformative impact of blockchain technology, Stephen earned a Blockchain Business Strategy qualification from Oxford University in 2018. Since then, he has concentrated his research and investments on digital assets fundamental to a more democratized financial system. Stephen is actively engaged with regulatory developments in the digital asset ecosystem, ensuring any investments adhere to evolving legal frameworks and industry standards.
Lucy Phillips, Head of Investor Relations
Lucy brings a wealth of project management, organisational and administrative experience to the MPAC team. Initially working within the corporate event space, Lucy moved on to manage large scale cycling events and corporate cycling clubs. More recently, during the pandemic, Lucy was engaged with the NHS working at vaccine centres and the central infection control office. Lucy has significant experience liaising with multiple stakeholders during the planning and running of projects and has a very keen eye for detail.
